I have tried out all of these grills and the Blackstone Portable Camping Grill is my personal preference. However, if you are looking for detailed reviews on the Cuisinart CGG-180T Petit Gourmet Portable Tabletop Gas Grill and the Coleman RoadTrip LXX Grill.

In camps and road trips, barbecues are probably the best option for preparing meals. Because a good portable camping barbecue requires little set-up and equipment. You can just drive to the middle of nowhere, take your barbecue out, light it up and cook. Camping and road trip barbecues are pretty much the same as others except that it must be a portable barbecue. So, choosing one camping barbecue or road trip barbecue out of the myriads available is a difficult task. But our buying guide and reviews of the best portable barbecue will definitely make the task a breeze for you.

Essential Tips for Buying a Portable Camping Barbecue

Do you know the basics of good portable camping barbecue but feel confused about what to prioritize when buying one? Here are a few tips:

  • Give the size and weight priority.

You need to remember at all times that you are looking for a portable camping barbecue. For that, you cannot just ignore its size and weight. First of all, you need to choose a size that will not only be big enough to make food for the number of people you have in mind but also should be easy to carry. In fact, you should be able to carry it alone and it shouldn’t take up much trunk space. You will need to know your cooking surface from the primary square inches and working space from the secondary square inches. Knowing how much you can fit on a portable camping barbecue will affect how long you’ll be cooking for.

Secondly, generally, barbecues under 50 pounds are considered to be portable. So, the lighter your barbecue weighs, the more easily you can carry it singlehandedly to wherever you are going.  Furthermore, they should have wheels attached to help portability. This is also a useful feature for tailgate barbecues.

  • Choose between charcoal or propane gas barbecue.

While there are various kinds of grills to choose from, it is best to choose between charcoal and gas when it comes to portable barbecues. Because where would you find an electric socket for an electric barbecue in the middle of nowhere?

In each of these types of grills, you have the options to carry them easily. For gas grills, you will need a tank that contains the propane gas while for charcoal grills you will need to have a supply of charcoal. While propane grills are easier to install and clean, they do not provide the totally traditional flavor of barbequed food. On the other hand, charcoal barbecues are harder to clean and control but they provide the best barbeque taste and experience.  Moreover, charcoal barbecues come in various types. Charcoal Barrel grills offer you a lot of space but less control while the kettle grills offer less space than the barrel ones but more control over temperature. On the other hand, Kamado grills are best at retaining heat and cook for long hours.

  • Prioritize the burner control rather than the BTU.

Many mistake BTU (British thermal unit) as the determinant of the cooking ability of the barbecue. But, the BTU actually just represents how much gas the grill needs to create the heat. Moreover, it depends a lot on the type of food you want to cook.

However, the burners have a direct influence on how fast and well the grill will heat the food. We suggest you buy barbecues with more than one burners as they provide you with better control on the temperature.

  • Stainless Steel bars for gas barbecues while porcelain coated steel bars for charcoal grills.

Stainless steel bars are the best but also more expensive material for gas grills. Again, while you can choose from porcelain cover steel bars and iron grates, it is best to avoid bent steel sheets as material for gas grills.

While porcelain coated steel bars or plated steel bars are best for charcoal grills, Stainless steel bars are also great but difficult to clean. However, it is best to ignore infrared burners in both cases.

  • Opt for features you prefer to have.

While gas grills offer you features like igniter, side-burner, LED control, pullout trays, fuel gauge, and etc. thermometer can be a useful accessory for both types. On the other hand, charcoal grills may offer you grates with adjustable heights, ashtrays, vents etc. Lastly, you can also opt for covers that provide wind resistance.

  • Safe and durable construction.

You do not want the grill to fall with burning coal and hurt anyone. So, make sure that the build is sturdy and flawless. The Cuisinart CGG-180T Petit Gourmet Portable Tabletop Gas Grill and Coleman RoadTrip LXX Grill are my choice for most durable.

Blackstone Grill Tailgater.

Portable Camping Barbecue

If you need versatility and a lot of features with some cuts on the portability, this is a great camping barbecue. First of all, it has four adjustable legs that stand perfectly and stable on any ground. So, if you are camping on the hills, voila! It’s two independently controlled burners make it more unique and appealing. You have an ‘H’ tube burner with 15,000 BTU and a cast iron burner with 20,000 BTU capability. Both perform great and gives you a cooking surface of 512 inches. Apart from the performance, it is very durable in the build.

  5. Very durable and well-built.
  6. Great for tailgating on road trips
  7. Amazon bestseller grill
  8. Grills the best-tasting food on this list (in my opinion)

Blackstone Grill Tailgater Portable Camping Grill Cons:

  1. A bit heavyweight.
  2. A lot of issues with the legs.
  3. No wheels for portability

While the Cuisinart CGG-180T is very portable, it does not offer a lot of cooking surface or the best quality. On the other hand, the Blackstone 1650 with its portability without compromising space or quality has earned our best road trip barbecue title.

Again, although the Blackstone Grill Tailgator is very durable, it does not offer the best portability or ease of set-up required for camping which the Coleman Roadtrip LLX does. So, Coleman Roadtrip LLX wins our best camping barbecue title with its portable features and cooking performance.

While barbequing with friends and family can be a lot of fun, it can turn into a disappointment with a faulty, inefficient barbecue. Furthermore, extra efforts for carrying it on trips can be exhausting as well. Therefore, you have to consider the basic features plus the portable features when it comes to portable barbecue. You will definitely end up with the best features if you choose this carefully but make sure to check the quality as well.
